Is Nutrisystem’s Food Frozen?

I recently heard from someone who wanted to know more about nutrisystem’s foods. One of her questions was “are the nutrisystem foods and meals frozen like the diets that you see in the grocery store? Do you just heat them up in the microwave or stove?” Actually, some of the diet’s foods are frozen and others aren’t. I will explain this further in the following article.

Many Of Nutrisystem’s Meals (Like Those Included In The Women’s And Men’s Basic Plans) Do Not Require The Freezer: Many people who are asking about the plan’s storage options worry that they don’t have a freezer big enough to store a month’s worth of meals. Many of this diet’s prepackaged meals do not require being frozen or even being refrigerated. Many of the meals are preserved with a process that is called “soft canning.” You are probably familiar with these types of foods even if you don’t know it. This is how manufacturers preserve foods like canned tomatoes or beans. This process is sometimes also called “shelf stable,” but what it means is that you don’t need to store it in any special way but it remains fresh. Many of the foods come in a little flat pouch that doesn’t require a lot of room and can easily travel.

Now, there is a particular line of nutrisystem foods that are frozen and I will discuss those below, but most of the basic lines do not include frozen foods. So, in terms of preparation, you don’t need to worry about the food spoiling and, sometimes, you will use the microwave to add boiling water to the prepackaged meals (although some of the meals are ready to eat right out of the packaging.)

Nutrisystem’s New Frozen Foods Are Part Of The Select Line: As I alluded to, the company has recently begun offering a line of frozen foods. It’s called the select line and the food is said to be gourmet quality. This line is a bit more expensive than say the basic plan, but some people feel that the extra cost is justified since many of the foods are pretty tasty. (And most of the plan’s allow for coupons which can bring your cost down by a lot.) That’s not to say that the non frozen foods don’t taste good. Many do.

Examples of some of the frozen and select offerings for breakfast are: a breakfast burrito; french toast; pancakes; and omelets. Examples of lunch offerings are foods like: chicken fajitas melts; meatball melts; a chicken quesadilla; a melted ham and Cheese sandwich; and a philly Cheese steak melt. For dinner, examples would be foods like: chicken alfredo; salisbury steak; premium ravioli; glazed turkey; shrimp alfredo; stuffed shells; teriyaki beef noodles; a bar b que pork wrap; a buffalo chicken wrap; and turkey pepperoni pizza.

To me the dessert and snack foods are where the select line really shines. They have ice cream sundaes, lime bars, ice cream sandwiches, and fudge bars, to name only a few examples. The select line is typically delivered by schwan home delivery and most of the foods can be easily prepared in the microwave.
